Winter in ski resorts brings enjoyment and physical activity, but it also brings injuries — many of which could be prevented. Each year, the Consumer Rights Protection Centre (CRPC) receives information about accidents involving ski lifts.
Ski lifts are not amusement attractions — they are hazardous installations, and their safe operation depends both on the responsibility of lift operators and on the attentiveness of skiers. This winter is no exception. CRPC therefore calls on both lift operators and skiers to strictly comply with safety requirements.
Why Do Accidents Occur?
Most accidents result from a combination of unfavourable circumstances. For example, passengers — particularly children — may fail to release themselves from the tow mechanism in time, for instance if clothing becomes caught on the seat or the tow rope becomes entangled around the body. Anchor-type lifts (T-bar lifts) pose a particularly elevated risk.
Such incidents can be prevented if lifts are continuously monitored along the entire route and if disembarkation areas are equipped with automatic safety devices.
Obligations of Ski Lift Operators
Lift operators are required to:
-
register ski lifts in the Hazardous Equipment Register;
-
ensure periodic technical inspections (at least once per year) by accredited inspection bodies;
-
maintain lifts in proper technical condition;
-
ensure sufficient, trained and instructed personnel;
-
report accidents and incidents to CRPC;
-
transport passengers strictly in accordance with the lift operating instructions.
When Is the Use of a Ski Lift Prohibited?
A ski lift must not be operated if:
-
it is not registered in the Hazardous Equipment Register;
-
mandatory periodic inspections have not been carried out;
-
the lift is left unattended, including situations where staff do not have full visibility of the route;
-
safety or signalling devices are not installed or are not functioning;
-
operating instructions are not available;
-
a risk assessment has not been performed;
-
an accident or serious incident has occurred during operation.
Recommendations for Passengers
CRPC advises passengers to:
-
choose clothing that cannot become caught on the lift seat or tow mechanism;
-
follow the lift usage rules and familiarise themselves with safety signs before use;
-
maintain an upright position and avoid sudden movements during transport;
-
embark and disembark only in designated areas;
-
wear a protective helmet to reduce the risk of head injuries;
-
refrain from using the lift if their age or physical ability is not appropriate;
-
contact staff immediately if there are concerns about safety.
