The Consumer Rights Protection Centre (CRPC), during monitoring of the 2025 “Black Friday” discount campaign, identified significant violations in the way discounts were advertised on popular Latvian e‑commerce platforms.
From 15 October to 11 December 2025, CRPC inspected 27 online stores. In total, more than 1.3 million product offers were examined across categories such as clothing, tools, computer equipment, cosmetics, home appliances, gaming consoles, phones, cleaning products, and smart devices.
Key Monitoring Results
-
Total products checked: 1,327,154
-
Products with discounts: 121,420 (9% of total)
-
Price transparency: In 43,855 cases (36% of discounted offers), 30-day price information was provided
The checks revealed a concerning trend — a large proportion of discounts were not fair to consumers.
Most Common Violations
-
Discount not applied to the lowest 30-day price: 18,230 cases (41.57% of offers with 30-day price information)
-
Selling price changed during the campaign: 3,187 cases (2.62% of all discounted offers)
-
Original price changed during the campaign: 1,779 cases (1.47% of all discounted offers)
There were also cases where discount periods were unreasonably long — up to 58 days, misleading consumers about the offer’s exclusivity.
CRPC Conclusion
Current commercial practices in Latvia’s online market regarding discount offers are often misleading. The most frequent problem is incorrect discount calculation — discounts are not applied from the lowest 30-day price as required by law.
CRPC Calls on Online Store Owners to:
-
Clearly, truthfully, and fairly indicate original product prices
-
Apply discounts only from the true lowest 30-day price
-
Stop misleading commercial practices that distort competition and mislead consumers
Based on these results, CRPC will assess the need for further monitoring actions against violators.
