In light of the escalation of the security situation in certain travel destinations in the Middle East region, the Consumer Rights Protection Centre (CRPC) reminds travellers of their rights in cases where a package travel arrangement—such as a flight combined with accommodation—is cancelled.

(!) CRPC urges travellers to first contact the specific tour operator or travel agent from whom the trip was purchased.

If the Tour Operator Cancels the Trip

If the tour operator terminates the package travel contract before the start of the trip, the operator is obliged to:

  • refund all payments made by the traveller;
  • complete the refund within 14 days from the date of contract termination.

If the Traveller Cancels the Trip

If the traveller cancels the trip for subjective reasons (for example, concerns about personal safety):

  • the service provider is not obliged to refund the amount paid;
  • a contract termination fee may be applied.

Exception – Extraordinary Circumstances

If unavoidable and extraordinary circumstances arise at the destination or in its immediate vicinity that significantly affect the performance of the trip (such as armed conflict, terrorism, serious security risks, natural disasters or major health threats), the traveller has the right to:

  • withdraw from the trip without a termination fee and receive a full refund of all payments made (without additional compensation); or
  • agree to an alternative solution, such as a change of travel dates, a change of destination, or a voucher/coupon.

Important: An extraordinary situation is considered confirmed only if it has been officially determined by the competent authorities of the respective country. Advisories issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are of a recommendatory nature.

If Problems Arise During the Trip

If, due to extraordinary circumstances, it is not possible to ensure the traveller’s return in accordance with the contract, the tour operator must provide accommodation for a period not exceeding three nights, covering the related costs. Any expenses for further accommodation must be covered by the traveller.

Travel Insurance

If travel insurance has been purchased, travellers are advised to review the terms and conditions of their insurance policy. In case of uncertainty, they should contact their insurance provider directly.

Additional Information

CRPC emphasises that each case is assessed individually. In the event of uncertainty, travellers should first contact the service provider.

For up‑to‑date information on the security situation, travellers are encouraged to follow official communications from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Consular Department.
